When I was recently invited to review Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel’s, new innovative fitness facility and healthy lifestyle cuisine, I didn’t hesitate to say yes. Having a passion for the East coast and with my fitness and museum studies background, I knew this would ‘fit my style’.
The first step was to travel to Boston with Fairmont’s Air Partner, Porter Airlines. I have always heard, once you go Porter, you never go back. I can now attest to that. Enjoying their lounge with complimentary drinks that rival your favorite coffee barista, utilizing the free Wi-Fi service; tapping away on the laptop, I was so relaxed and focused on my work, I could have easily missed my flight.
The Porter flight was highlighted with a delicious chicken and roasted pepper baguette sandwich, pesto salad, steam whistle beer or wine and a chocolate to cleanse my palette. The entire experience was smooth, stress free and rewarding, like no other flight.
Landing in Boston, a city that celebrates and redefines the American spirit through its culture, history and its traditions, I arrived at the Copley Plaza Hotel, located in Boston’s Back Bay area to be greeted by large gilded Lions, which have symbolized the hotel: Majestic and Grand, since its opening in 1912. To celebrate its historic centennial this year, the hotel recently completed a $20 million renovation and restoration project.
Having passed through the grand entrance doors, I was taken to the “Gold Floor” where I met my private concierge team. Warm and friendly, and with a big smile, I was told “We have been expecting you.” They immediately shared that the suite I would be staying in was the staff favorite (Room 433). I was given a tour of the Gold Floor which offers a private lounge, complimentary breakfast and evening appetizers with a full honors bar. Complimentary computers, global newspapers and DVDS filmed in Boston, were all available to access.
The sconces flanking the door should have been my hint on what to expect next. I entered the suite to a marble foyer, looking up to cathedral ceilings, an ornate fireplace, sketches of Boston; all rooms in a rich plum décor, soft lighting, and with music playing. I had arrived.
My window seat, overlooking the square, was the best seat in the “house” with the famed Trinity Church, Boston Public Library, and the local farmers market, all in birds eye view.
My first destination, the new fitness center of course! The center is a fitness enthusiasts dream, 3,000 square feet on the rooftop of the hotel. Lined with the latest equipment, free weights and in-house fitness trainer, I enjoyed a rewarding workout. It is the little details that matter, such as the fresh fruit bowls, water, signature FH teas, and the chilled towels, that made this a ‘Fairmont’ experience.
Working up an appetite, I enjoyed eating in the elegant St. James Room. The hotel offers an extensive Healthy lifestyle menu, “Lifestyle Cuisine Plus”. These offerings cater to guests with specific dietary conditions as well as macrobiotic, raw and vegan items, to contribute to optimal health and wellness.
Thoroughly rejuvenated, I spent my remaining time walking through Boston, capturing the essence the city had to offer, meeting many Bostonians along the way, friendly and very interested in my first visit to their city.
Tree lined Brownstone buildings filled Newbury Street, known for their cache of unique shops, restaurants and spas. After travelling on the “T”, I immersed myself in The American and European wings of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Having studied many of the decorative arts on view in graduate school, it was a homecoming to see them in live view, bringing an array of emotions to my visit.
As my flight ascends, I am relaxed, renewed and inspired by this charming and historical city, and my first experience there, already thinking of when I can return for another visit.
